Keep devices updated, limit access and use networks and applications more safely.

What you will learn

  • Install updates and trusted applications
  • Secure devices and sensitive information
  • Use public networks cautiously

Safety note

Use invented examples during practice. Never publish or send real passwords, PINs, verification codes, recovery codes, private tokens or complete financial details. If money or account access may be at risk, contact the relevant provider promptly through independently verified official details.

Keep software current

Install operating-system, browser and app security updates promptly. Enable automatic updates where practical and restart when required.

Download applications from official stores or publisher websites. Avoid cracked software and unexpected update prompts from advertisements.

Protect the device

Use a screen lock, encryption where supported and automatic locking. Back up important information and configure a lost-device feature before the device disappears.

Review app permissions for camera, microphone, contacts, location, files and accessibility control. Remove access that is not necessary.

Use networks carefully

Public Wi-Fi may be monitored or imitated. Avoid sensitive transactions on an unknown network and confirm the exact network name with the provider.

Turn off automatic connection and sharing when not needed. HTTPS protects the connection to a site but cannot make a fraudulent site honest.

Guided practice

  1. Check update status on one device.
  2. Review permissions for three installed apps.
  3. Confirm screen lock, backup and lost-device settings.

Knowledge check

  1. Why are updates important?
  2. What permissions should apps receive?
  3. Does HTTPS prove a website is honest?

Completion standard

Continue when you can complete the guided practice safely and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
