Buying and Selling Safely in Online Marketplaces
Evaluate listings and payment claims before handing over money, goods or personal information.
Evaluate listings and payment claims before handing over money, goods or personal information.
What you will learn
- Recognise risky listings and buyer messages
- Verify condition identity and payment
- Use safer handover and communication habits
Safety note
Use invented examples during practice. Never publish or send real passwords, PINs, verification codes, recovery codes, private tokens or complete financial details. If money or account access may be at risk, contact the relevant provider promptly through independently verified official details.
Evaluate the listing
Be cautious of prices far below the market, copied pictures, vague descriptions, pressure and refusal to allow reasonable inspection. Search images or listing text when duplication is suspected.
Ask specific questions and preserve the listing and messages. A profile age, rating or identity claim should be considered with other evidence, not treated as a guarantee.
Confirm payment
A screenshot, email or message saying paid is not proof. Check the actual balance or transaction history through the official financial service before releasing an item.
Do not pay an invented upgrade, insurance or account-release fee to receive money. Never give a buyer a verification code to prove you are real.
Meet and hand over safely
Use a suitable public or agreed safe place, tell someone the plan and avoid carrying unnecessary cash. Inspect and test the item where practical.
Confirm the total price, included accessories, condition and delivery responsibilities. Stop if the other person changes the arrangement under pressure.
