Define who the business serves and connect marketing activity to a measurable result.

What you will learn

  • Describe a useful target customer
  • Set a practical marketing goal
  • Map the journey from discovery to repeat purchase

Before you begin

Use a real business only when you have permission to manage its information. Practise with a small budget or invented campaign first. Never publish customer information, account passwords, verification codes, private tokens or payment credentials.

Start with the customer

Marketing begins with a real customer need, not a social platform. Describe the customer’s situation, priorities, location, budget and reasons for choosing one offer over another.

Use conversations, enquiries, reviews and sales records rather than stereotypes. A business may have several customer groups, but each campaign should focus on one.

Choose a clear goal

A useful goal names the result, quantity and time period, such as ten qualified enquiries in four weeks. Followers and views matter only when they support a business outcome.

Choose one primary action: call, WhatsApp message, store visit, booking, purchase or email sign-up. Make that action easy to find.

Map the journey

A customer may discover the business, compare options, ask questions, buy, receive support and return. Marketing should answer the concern at each stage.

Record where prospects stop or become confused. Improving response time, directions or price clarity can outperform creating more posts.

Guided practice

  1. Describe one ideal customer using evidence.
  2. Set one thirty-day marketing goal.
  3. Draw the customer journey and identify its weakest step.

Knowledge check

  1. What should a customer description be based on?
  2. What makes a goal measurable?
  3. Why map the customer journey?

Completion standard

Continue when you can complete the guided practice and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
