Part 9 of 10 | Photography for Online Selling

Learning goals

You will select images with distinct purposes, name and order them consistently and prepare suitable exports. You will separate current platform rules from general photographic advice and review the final files without publishing a listing.

Before you begin

Allow 60 minutes with your practice images and shot list. Use a local folder for the selected set. Do not create or publish a live listing during this exercise. The course specifies no universal upload limit or mandatory photo count for GambiaUsed or other platforms.

Select for information and consistency

Begin with the clearest overall image of the actual item. Add views that answer different questions: another side, important details, dimensions, condition and included accessories. Remove exact duplicates and weak frames that contribute nothing. More files are not automatically more useful if they repeat the same information.

Compare colour and condition across the set. Large unexplained differences can make one item appear to be several different products. Retake an inconsistent view when lighting or editing caused the discrepancy. Do not select the most flattering frame at the expense of an accurate account of the condition.

Plan a logical sequence

Use the first image to identify the offer. Follow with views that explain shape and useful features, then make important condition evidence easy to find. Do not bury a significant defect behind many repetitive attractive images. The description should also state the defect clearly rather than relying on the viewer to discover it.

Order the files with an internal code and number, such as BagA_01_front, BagA_02_back and BagA_03_inside. Add a role description where it helps. Filenames can support organisation, but verify the order in the destination preview later because upload systems may arrange files differently.

Check the actual destination rules

Create a small requirements note for the intended website or platform. Record accepted formats, dimensions, file-size limits, image count, cropping behaviour and rules about added text or watermarks. Use current official information or the actual upload guidance. Mark missing information unconfirmed instead of copying requirements from a different service.

For example, eBay's current picture policy prohibits added borders, text, artwork and watermarks, and restricts stock images for used or damaged items. Those are eBay rules, not assertions about GambiaUsed. They illustrate why a branded promotional graphic may be unsuitable as a marketplace listing photo even when the design looks professional.

Understand size and compression

Pixel dimensions describe the image grid, while file size describes how much storage the encoded file uses. A highly detailed photo and a plain photo can have different file sizes at the same dimensions. Reducing compression quality can reduce file size but may damage texture and small text.

Use an accepted format and dimensions for the actual destination. JPEG is commonly used for photographs, but check the service rather than assuming support for every phone format. Keep the original and create an upload copy. Changing a filename extension alone does not convert the underlying format.

Avoid unnecessary quality loss

Export from the original or a good edited master rather than repeatedly saving and forwarding already compressed copies. A screenshot of a photograph can reduce usable detail and introduce interface clutter. Messaging routes may resize files, so inspect the copy that actually reaches the upload folder.

Do not enlarge a small blurry image simply to satisfy a minimum dimension. It may produce more pixels without more truthful detail. Return to the source or retake the photograph when necessary. Check sharpness, colour and condition after compression, especially in the images that show labels or defects.

Keep captions factual and useful

Write short descriptions such as rear view showing both handle attachments or surface mark near lower corner. Include important facts in the listing text as well, because images may not be accessible to every reader. Where the destination supports alt text, use it to convey the relevant visual information rather than repeating unrelated promotional wording.

Keep prices, contact details and changeable promotional claims out of the clean photo set unless the destination specifically calls for them. They can become outdated and may be restricted. Maintain a separate promotional version if needed, and verify that it is not accidentally chosen as the lead product photo.

Review the local upload folder

Open every selected export and compare it with the item record. Check item identity, orientation, crop, detail, privacy and filename sequence. Ensure no unrelated image, unedited private original or obsolete product is included. Preserve an inventory so you can repeat the process for another item.

If you later use a destination's draft preview, inspect its crop and order before choosing to publish. Saving a draft and publishing are separate actions. This exercise ends with a prepared local folder and a list of any platform checks still required.

Guided exercise

1. Select a non-redundant image set and write the buyer question answered by each file.

2. Name the files with one item code and a logical sequence. Match condition details to the written description.

3. Make a destination requirements note using current official guidance where available. Do not substitute eBay rules for another website's rules.

4. Export compatible practice copies and inspect their detail after any resizing or compression. Keep the originals separately.

5. Prepare factual captions and a local file inventory. Record unverified destination checks without publishing.

Knowledge check

1. Does renaming a file from one extension to another convert it?

2. Should eBay's watermark rule be assumed to govern GambiaUsed?

3. Can enlarging a blurred file restore true detail?

Answer guide

1. No. Use a proper export or conversion process.

2. No. Verify the actual destination's requirements.

3. No. Use a better source or retake the photograph.

Completion standard

Produce a clear, ordered local photo set with an inventory, factual captions and a destination requirements note. Every image must add useful information and pass identity, condition, quality and privacy review.
