MacBook for Beginners · Part 8

Protecting Privacy Security and a Lost MacBook

Use updates, permissions, encryption and Find My to reduce security and privacy risks.

Use updates, permissions, encryption and Find My to reduce security and privacy risks.

What you will learn

  • Review privacy permissions and indicators
  • Use FileVault Find My and secure passwords appropriately
  • Respond safely to suspicious activity

Before you begin

Use non-sensitive practice files and save your work before changing settings. Menu names can vary with the macOS version and MacBook model, so use System Settings search or the Help menu when an option is not immediately visible.

Review permissions

Privacy and Security settings control access to location, camera, microphone, files, input monitoring and other sensitive capabilities. Grant only access needed for an app’s purpose.

Menu-bar indicators can show camera, microphone, system audio or location use. Investigate unexpected access and remove permissions from apps you no longer trust.

Protect the device

A strong login password, automatic locking and FileVault can protect information. Store recovery information securely before enabling encryption.

Find My can help locate, lock or erase a lost Mac when configured. Remote erase is serious and should be used only after understanding its effect.

Avoid scams and malware

Install updates and software from trusted sources. Never give a caller remote control or disclose a verification code unless you independently confirmed the support channel.

If something suspicious occurs, disconnect from risky activity, preserve evidence, change affected credentials from a trusted device and seek qualified help.

Guided practice

  1. Review app access under Privacy and Security.
  2. Confirm automatic screen locking and update status.
  3. Check whether Find My and FileVault are configured and record recovery responsibilities.

Knowledge check

  1. What can privacy indicators reveal?
  2. What must be secured before enabling FileVault?
  3. What should you do with an unexpected remote-support request?

Completion standard

Continue when you can complete the guided practice safely and explain the knowledge-check answers in your own words.
